21.08.1 Categories of certificates of airworthiness

(1)The categories of certificates of airworthiness are—
(a)a standard category certificate of airworthiness;
(b)a special category certificate of airworthiness.

 

(2)A standard certificate of airworthiness may be issued to aircraft in the specific airworthiness design standard as prescribed in technical standard 21.02.3 provided the aircraft meets the requirements of the specific regulatory part and may consist of the following categories:
(a)normal, utility, acrobatic and commuter aeroplanes;
(b)manned free balloon;
(c)transport category (aeroplanes);
(d)normal category (rotorcraft);
(e)transport category (rotorcraft); and
(f)non-rigid airship.

(3)A special airworthiness certificate may be issued to an aircraft that does not fully meet the requirements of the State of Design for a standard airworthiness certificate. The types of special category certificate of airworthiness shall consist of—
(a)an experimental certificate or a special flight permit; and
(b)a restricted category certificate of airworthiness.

 

(4)An aircraft may be issued with a standard category certificate of airworthiness which includes limitations that otherwise would require it to be issued with a special category certificate of airworthiness, provided the aircraft may be converted from one configuration to another by removing or adding equipment by simple mechanical means, and complies with the requirements prescribed for flight operations in that configuration and the particular operation.
